Shirley Baechtold, Books and Music

“Books and Music: Shirley’s Next Gig,” a special performance by Richmond author and entertainer Shirley Baechtold, is scheduled for Feb. 27 at the Richmond Area Arts Council.

The 6-8 p.m. program will feature a musical presentation during the first hour and a book signing during the final 60 minutes.  The event is free and open to the public.

Shirley will play and sing songs in tribute to George and Ira Gershwin.  She’ll also focus on songs inspiring memories of times, places, and people in her musical life, starting with her first experiences as a vocalist in a college jazz band.

Several new books will be available for sale by the author.  But I Digress features accounts from her popular “Hilarious Shirley Emails,” newspaper columns, and other writings.  The Ever Constant Moon, the third historical novel in a trilogy about a girl growing up in the 1940s, will also be available.

Baechtold is a writer, musician, and professor emeritus of English at Eastern Kentucky University.  She is also an EKU alumna.  Baechtold had an early career as a jazz musician, and she performed at clubs in Kentucky, Ohio, and New York.  She is the widow of basketball star Jim Baechtold, who played professionally for the New York Knicks and was a basketball coach at EKU.

Shirley has written five books plus several children’s books and stories.  She’ll also have available copies of her CD, “Shirley’s Sings the Blues,” the proceeds from which will be donated to the Arts Council.

This event is free and open to the public.
